Eric Powell & the Kingdom of Monsters #1

First, I want to say that I'm not a huge Godzilla fan. The thought of a giant lizard in japan is not very relevant to me, but Godzilla Kingdom of Monsters is written by Eric Powell. Powell makes this book bearable to me. His skill lies in Horror/Humor stories, which is what this book is all about. Added to the amazing, eye-popping artwork, and you've got me HOOKED! This is definitely 5 star material. 5 out of 5-Chris

Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt # 1

Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt #1
Written by Sean McKeever
Art by Mike Norton and Veronica Gandini
Lettering by Clayton Cowles
Published by Marvel Comics
Review by Teresa Jusino
From www.newsarama.com

Sean McKeever seems to be the go-to guy for writing young superheroes these days. After a sadly short-lived run with Young Allies, McKeever is back to bringing us some of those characters, as well as some other fascinating young heroes from the Marvel Universe, and showing us how the events of Fear Itself are affecting them in Fear Itself: Youth In Revolt.

Issue #1 begins with Prodigy, having finally settled into a normal life after the events of Civil War, getting a message from Steve Rogers asking him to head up a new Initiative of young heroes to help with the current situation plaguing the planet. Prodigy reluctantly accepts, realizing that the very things that make him reluctant are the things that would make him the perfect choice to lead. (Steve Rogers seems to have a great knack for hiring people and putting them where they need to be) Other young heroes join this Initiative, also reluctantly, and they are quickly in the thick of things, forced to put their personal rivalries aside for the greater good. As they attempt to save the fearful general populace from itself, Thor Girl gets cornered by law enforcement who are suspicious and afraid of the hammer she wields in light of the five hammers that have fallen all over the world, and she attempts to convince them that she was trying to help.

McKeever has done an excellent job of not only figuring out where all of these young heroes fit into the events of the larger Fear Itself storyline, but he’s managed to give so many of them their own stories based on their individual wants and needs. We’ll get to watch Prodigy deal with being a leader after having been imprisoned twice for his individualistic, leader-like qualities; Gravity and Firestar’s return to working with a team despite things going badly last time they tried; Cloud 9’s return to superhero life, period, after swearing to give it up and trying to live a normal life; and Thor Girl’s struggle with what it means to have chosen to mold herself after the Asgardians now that they have seemingly abandoned humanity. McKeever has written a fast-paced, human story that never loses sight of the characters even as they delve into the larger plot.

Mike Norton is one of those artists whose style is a perfect fit for stories with young characters, and so he was an excellent choice for this limited series. He does well by large images (his two-page spread of all the young heroes listening to Prodigy’s proposal is great), action panels, as well as smaller character moments where an eyebrow crinkle can reveal so much; and he draws it all with a buoyant, youthful energy. I could easily see his images as an animated series.

Sometimes, I think that every event is overrun with tie-in titles. However, I respect the fact that Marvel always checks in with the least-known of its superheroes, fitting them into the story and showing us how the world’s big events affect the most vulnerable. McKeever’s Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt is a promising read in its first issue as it plunges character-first into the events of Fear Itself.

Batman Incorporated #6
Written by Grant Morrison
Art by Chris Burnham and Nathan Fairbairn
Lettering by Pat Brosseau
Published by DC Comics

It was ironic that recent installments of Batman Incorporated made mention of the concept of Ouroboros (a snake that eats its own tail, forming a never-ending loop), because with the past couple of issues the book was similarly close to disappearing into itself. However, with this issue, things seem to be getting back on track and returning the title to the "short, punchy stories" that writer Grant Morrison promised when the title was first announced.

From cover to gloriously intricate final double-page, Batman Incorporated #6 is a perfect illustration of the concept of Bruce Wayne's war-on-crime going global, and is long overdue, possibly to the point where it should have been the opening issue. Using a meeting in Gotham's underworld as a framing device, we're given a rollicking, globetrotting tour of the current set-up of Batman's army in an issue so densely packed that it's hard to pick out the highlights. I'll give it my best shot though: highlights include Batman trolling on the internet, Cassandra Cain making a re-appearance in a new guise, and more overtly sinister clues to what global terror organization Leviathan's plans are.

To counter this, the reader is shown that as always Batman has a fair idea of the enemy he faces, and this information is shared off-panel with his closest allies in no less than three occasions in this book. Keeping the readers one step behind the characters in this manner is a smart narrative trick that teases us to the point where we're dying to know what's actually going on, and so demands that we keep up. Tellingly, characters that seemed one-note and disposable from last year's Batman: The Return make an appearance, if only to underscore a point: both Grant Morrison and Batman are preparing for something huge, and they will need everyone they can get.

A take on 28 Days Later

“Michael Alan Nelson keeps the suspenseful plot moving at high speed…The 28 DAYS LATER franchise is taken to a new level here, where characters are making sacrifices they never thought possible.” –Fangoria
And to tell you the truth i totally agree. - Kat

Review Irredeemable vol1 TPB

I can honestly say tat this is one well written book. In fact, I'd say this book is "Comic Book Crack"! What I mean is it's really the kind of book you can't stop reading. The art is decent, the characters are kind of generic looking, but OMG the story is awesome. This is one book I'm certainly going to pick up on a regular basis.

NO WONDER WOMAN

by Silas Lesnick
May 13th, 2011
Info found on www.superherohype.com

David E. Kelley's "Wonder Woman" television series has failed to find a network pickup at NBC, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter.

The series was planned as a reinvention of the iconic DC Comics title in which Wonder Woman (Adrianne Palicki) is both a vigilante crime fighter in Los Angeles, a successful corporate executive (as her alter ego, Diana Prince) and a modern woman trying to balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life.

The pilot was written by Kelley and directed by Jeffrey Reiner ("The Event") and also featured Elizabeth Hurley, Pedro Pascal, Tracie Thoms and Cary Elwes in the cast.

With NBC declining to give the go-ahead, it is unlikely that the comic book adaptation will see the light of day as a series. What is more likely -- albeit, not a guarantee -- is that the produced pilot could be released in one form or another, as was the case with the unproduced "Smallville" spin-off, "Aquaman," which was released on iTunes and sold as a Best Buy exclusive.

Comic book Reveiws

Comic Book Reviews By: Alicia (Kat Clark) Inman and Chris (Poepo) Inman

Angel #44 for $3.99
After being sent to the future Angel returns to the present time where Connor, Gun, and Anne are fighting off a powerful evil. This comic is a great point to start catching up and starting in. The art is spectacular with all the characters looking so much like the ones from the show. A nice little plus in this issue if you are just starting to read angel is the big power show off by Connor. I would give it a 4 out of 5. -Kat

100-Page Spectacular Angel $7.99
The Curse: This is a great little one shot. This one shot has a great little update into Angel's emotional state and how he plans on getting around the whole no happiness if he has “perfect” happiness curse. And it takes place in Romania as he is trying to help the gypsies. So a recap iner thoughts of Angel, really pissed off Romanian vamps and sunlight all around I totally give it a 4 out of 5. -Kat

Mystery Date: Here we find Nina(werewolf girl) and Angel, in puppet form, going out to have a “normal” night out. When a dismissed client comes to destroy Angel. The story keeps you guessing and asking what is happening. I would have to give it a 3 out of 5. -Kat

Auld Long Syne: This was a great issue as we find Angel and Spike after they both have been battling people from their past. This is a issue that is worth the the price of the whole book with both Angel and Spike going at each other and not holding anything back this time. I fully give it a 5 out of 5.- Kat

Last Angel in Hell: Angel and the gang are at San Diego in a Sci-fi Festival. (“Rip-off of the comic con.”-Connor) They are looking for a flaming sword but get much more when all the people in costume become their characters it is a great end to the 100- page spectacular. I would have to give it a 4 out of 5 for the pure comedy factor.

Spike #7 $3.99
Spike has lost his soul but luckly he knows just where to find it, right in Dru. But first we get a glimpse at the ship that Spike is caption of in the future in Buffy that is piloted by bugs. This is a great comic to see start off with and to help you understand how Spike came upon the ship in the fist place if you have read or plan to read Buffy. This is a 5 out of 5 for sure.

Dollhouse one shot $3.50
This is a great start to show the Dollhouse world. As the first two seasons ended with showing us that the tech that made the dolls the way they were became the end of the world as we know it and started a whole new one. The characters Zone and Helen are great and you get a great since of who they are. The art work was amazing and the story keeps you interested and wanting more. I am really looking forward to Dollhouse #1 on sale July 13, 2011 and you can find it and this one shot at Poepoz. I give this 5 out of 5.-Kat

X-23 vs. Daken: Dark Wolverine $2.99
In this comic you have a lot of insight in the back story which helped me because I had not been able to get a X-23 comic in a while. The art work was great and the action was movie worthy and of course this issue ends at the start of a possibly epic battle though with all the build up here and there and the answer to many questions that have been hanging in the balance for a while. I will have to give it a 3 out of 5.-Kat

Fear Itself Prologue Book of the Skull one shot $3.99
This is a great prologue to Fear Itself for all the unanswered questions of how Sin even knew about the hammer and how did she know about it. Here we find the answers and she how Sin is still wanting to be better than the Skull. We find out that the Skull in February 1942 got the hammer sent to him but from whom is still a mystery. I give it a 4 out of 5.-Kat

Part Five War of the Green Lanterns Green Lantern Corps # 59 $2.99
Here we get to see how bad the lanterns are being affected. They are all turning against the ones who have not been affected. Also how the four green lanterns that have not been taken over are planning and dealing with how to deal with the others. Though the story is great I just found myself wanting more. I give it a 4 out of 5.-Kat

Batgirl # 20 $2.99
Batgirl is fighting a super speed villain and more importantly Bardra is not stepping up and hold Batgirls hand though this one. Though I wish the art was a bit better but the story was cute and it was great to see how the characters are growing. I give in a 3 out of 5.- Kat

Planet of the Apes #1 $3.99
This is a interesting story picking up your attention and holding it all the way through. You get to have a revealing view of the characters in this book. In the end you are looking forward to the next issue though not thinking you did not really get enough in this one. I felt the drama and action along with the mystery where well dispersed through out the issue. I am personally looking forward to the next issue and rate this one a 5 out of 5. -Kat

X-Force #1 $1.00
With this comic being only 1 dollar you get WAY more than you pay for. It starts you off with great art work by Clayton Crain, It is eye grasping and the characters are better than ever. After this issue I look forward to each and every one of the 5 issues left of this run. I give it a 4.75 out of 5.-Kat

Irredeemable #1 and Incorruptible #1 $1.00
Well you could say you are only giving 50 cents for each of these comics and to tell the truth you are really under paying here. It's very graphic and it's the beginning of the story. You get a good feeling of the bigger story. good read.
